My paper won't open, what do I do?

Students may bring files in a number of different file formats. Some of these are: Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx); Microsoft Works (.wps); WordPerfect (.wpd); Open Office's Open Document (.odt); Apple Pages (.pgs); and more. If the software program isn't on the computer, the file will not automatically load. For future use, students should save their files in a Rich Text Format (.rtf) or Adobe reader format (.pdf) for easier use on computers other than their own.

To open a file in Word that has been saved in another file format, perform the following steps:

  1. Save the file on the desktop.
  2. Activate Word and navigate through the Open dialog to find the file on the desktop. Word will usually bring up the file, but it will probably have errors in it due to the conversion process. The document will need to be checked carefully to correct these errors.
